While Akumal is a quiet, laid-back town focused on beautiful beaches,
snorkeling and pristine diving, it is literally thirty minutes from
everything along the Mayan Riviera. You can catch a ferry to Cozumel,
and shop the markets in Playa Del Carmen.
There are Mayan ruins, golf, nature parks, restaurants, and even active nightlife.

Snorkeling and Diving - Akumal's Best Attraction!
The area around Half-Moon Bay is an environmental preserve, which provides Akumal with incredible snorkeling and some of the best diving in the Caribbean, since Akumal is on the Meso-American reef (2nd longest reef system in the world). Especially unique to the Mayan Riviera are the cenotes, fresh-water underground streams, which offering unique experiences in snorkeling, diving and exploring. Wildlife Just down the road is Aktun Chen, which has a cave tour, and its own private wildlife preserve. An hour to the south is Sian Kaan, a government sponsered ecological sanctuary which can be toured (4WD vehicles suggested). And in the town of Akumal there is an environmental agency (Centro Ecologico Akumal, or CEA) which is active in animal conservation and environmental preservation. They are esepecially known for thir work with sea turtles, and "turtle walks" are available at some times during the year. Nearby Xel-Ha, a water and wildlife park, features snorkeling and swimming with dolphins. Xcaret, also just minutes away, has swimming with dolphins, an underground river, aquarium, and butterfly pavilion. Culture Many of the best-known Mayan sites are in easy driving range of Akumal. The closest are Tulum and Coba, which are a short drive, but even the famous Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza can be visited on a long day trip or with an overnight stay. |
